Southern cuisine restaurant Doc Crow’s Smokehouse & Raw Bar is under new management — sort of.

Some of the original investors, which includes members of locally based Falls City Hospitality Group, have shifted to silent partners, and investor group Bertuca Organization has purchased a majority stake in Doc Crow’s, as well as its sister restaurant in Nashville, Union Common steakhouse.

The news comes around the same time that Fall City Hospitality Group and Waterfront Development Corp. are expected to reach an agreement related to the Doc’s Cantina property in Waterfront Park that will allow WDC to move forward with finding a new tenant.

Ted Bertuca Jr., who owns the Nashville-based Bertuca Organization with his father, told Insider Louisville that he wasn’t sure what the ultimate price ended up being as it changed multiple times before the deal was inked.

The company is a longtime investor in the restaurants and restaurants in general. “We’ve owned and operated restaurants for a long time. We have had over 30 restaurants in our lifetime,” Bertuca Jr. said.

The pair bought a 95 percent stake in Doc Crow’s, he said, because they want to manage and expand the restaurant into a chain.

“The food and bourbon selection is outstanding,” Bertuca Jr. said. “We just feel like it’s great food at a reasonable price that can be delivered to the masses.”

When asked about a six-word post on the company’s website stating that it is opening a Doc Crow’s in Dayton, Ohio, in April 2019, Bertuca Jr. was less resolute, telling Insider that Dayton is a possible location, and Bertuca Organization is looking at other sites in Louisville as well.

The hope, he said, is to open a second location sometime in 2019 and then ramp up expansion in late 2020 or early 2021. “Our goal is to take that regional,” Bertuca Jr. said.

Notably, Bertuca Organization doesn’t just own and manage restaurants. It also has some real estate developments, including the Tru by Hilton Louisville East.
